The Cage

At the 2011 Toronto Fringe
Receives Civil Liberties Association Endorsement

“The Cage” premiering at the Toronto Fringe Festival Thursday July 7th 2011 has received official support from the Canadian Civil Liberties Association (CCLA), as well as the National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE).

The Canadian Civil Liberties Association (CCLA) is a national organization dedicated to promoting respect for and observance of fundamental human rights and civil liberties. Its work, which includes research, public education and advocacy, aims to defend and ensure the protection and full exercise of those rights and liberties.

The National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE) is a family of 11 Component unions. Taken together they are one of the largest unions in Canada. Most of their 340,000 members work to deliver public services of every kind to the citizens of their home provinces. NUPGE also has a large and growing number of members who work for private businesses.

The CCLA and NUPGE released a report about the G20 Summit on February 28th, 2011 based upon the public hearings they organized in November 2010. The report identifies a series of human rights violations and offers a series of recommendations for future large scale policing endeavours. Dr. Valerie Zawiliski was one of the witnesses to come forward and contribute to the Breach of Peace Public Hearings. Her testimony can be found at http://ccla.org/our-work/focus-areas/g8-and-g20/g20-hearings-audio/

The Cage is a new work developed by the Voices On The Wind ensemble. Building on a script by Dr Valarie Zawilski , professor of Sociology, who was detained at the G20 protests, the performance utilizes a satirical cabaret structure  while simultaneously allowing the narrative ‘”inside the cage” to unfold.

The Cage will take the stage barely a year after the G20 descended upon Toronto, and days after the announcement will be made about which of the class action suits will go forward. Co-hosted by Stephan Harpére and Stanley the Magical Talking Cat, the cage promises to be an “arresting” performance.
