From press release
This is the story about a man, his family and bread.
At age 15, acclaimed Canadian actor Greg Ellwand (Lord Peter Wimsey, Democracy, The Listener) learned from his mother how to bake bread: simple, clean bread, turned out every Sunday, that nourished his family growing up.
In a stage story that has been 31 years in the making, Greg reflects on the process, the product, and the possibility that such a simple food can heal and unite. Woven into the narrative are three moving stories that reflect on gifts and kinship, healing in a family and the power of simple things.
Directed by his wife Toni Ellwand (Bomb Girls, The Open Couple, Nine Parts of Desire), with live musical accompaniment by Dan Imbrogno, and guest appearance by daughter Ellie , Greg Ellwand’s BREAD is a lesson, a meditation, a recipe and a call to action: at the end, go home, make bread, teach your children.
The production also features an innovative partnership with local baker Sara Lapell, whose gluten-free “Nice Buns” will be shared at the event.
Greg Ellwand’s BREAD will be presented at the Annex Theatre, 730 Bathurst Street in Toronto, as part of the Fringe of Toronto Theatre Festival:
