Die Roten Punkte – KUNST ROCK (ART ROCK) (Die Roten Punkte) – 2010 Toronto Fringe Review

By Amber Landgraff

When I saw that Die Roten Punkte were going to be in this year’s Fringe with Die Roten Punkte – KUNST ROCK (ART ROCK) I was so excited.  I saw them perform during their Super Musikant Tour in 2008 and instantly became a fan.  KUNST ROCK may be more arty than Super Musikant but that doesn’t mean that it isn’t just as much fun.

The show involves a rollicking performance by brother and sister duo Otto and Astrid Rot.  Orphaned at a young age when their parents were killed by a train on the way to the zoo, they only have each other and their music.

Their performance is full of energy as they bicker between and sometimes even during songs.  They flirt with members of the audience (Otto flirted with me!).  They demonstrate an inappropriate closeness for a brother and sister.  Astrid and Otto Rot were on full form Saturday afternoon.

Good comedians know the importance of timing.  Before Astrid and Otto were even on stage they had the audience laughing due to a clever use of stage lights that lasted just long enough for the audience to pick up that it was intentional, but not too long that it stopped being funny.  When Astrid and Otto finally make their appearance the audience was primed for a fun hour’s performance.

The chemistry between Otto and Astrid is amazing, and their interplay is worth going to the show for alone.  For old fans and new, Die Roten Punkte – KUNST ROCK (ART ROCK) is a not to be missed performance.

Otto, if you read this:  We bonded over a shared love of bananas and appreciation for vegetarianism.  I like politics and I think you’re dreamy.  Maybe I could see you again?  At next year’s Fringe, perhaps?
