Newfoundland Actors Bring Toronto Poet’s First Play to Life
Toronto-based poet Shannon Bramer is now wearing a different hat –that of playwright. Her first play, MonaRita, had its premiere in St. John’s, NL, in 2010, and is now set to tour this summer, including stops in Bramer’s current city, Toronto, and her home town of Hamilton. Bramer is thrilled that the original cast is bringing her work to a larger audience across Canada. “I can’t imagine other actors doing the show now. They’re my girls!”, she said.
“How do you know if someone loves you?”
MonaRita is the hilariously surreal story of two close friends at a crossroads. After Mona becomes a mother, she loses herself— and the greatest friendship of her life is in danger of being lost when best friend Rita breaks it off to make a new life without her. Will Mona let Rita go? Can Rita exist without Mona? Isn’t love supposed to last forever?
MonaRita was directed by award-winning filmmaker Sherry White and features some of Newfoundland’s most talented and accomplished actors, Sara Tilley and Ruth Lawrence.
Sherry White returns to the theatre, fresh from her latest TV and film projects (including the Geni-nominated film, Crackie) to direct a show that demands trust and vulnerability between its two actors. Funny and poignant, the friendship of sweet-natured, fumbling Mona and self-assured go-getter Rita will make you laugh. Spending 60 minutes with these two may also make you appreciate those people in your life who know and love you, as you are.
