Newfoundland Actors Bring Toronto Poet’s First Play to Life
Toronto-based poet Shannon Bramer is now wearing a different hat –that of playwright. Her first play, MonaRita, had its premiere in St. John’s, NL, in 2010, and is now set to tour this summer, including stops in Bramer’s current city, Toronto, and her home town of Hamilton. Bramer is thrilled that the original cast is bringing her work to a larger audience across Canada. “I can’t imagine other actors doing the show now. They’re my girls!”, she said. Urban Jungle Theatre’s Jungle 1: i Spy part ofnew wave of site-specific theatre unveiled at Toronto’s Fringe Festival
TORONTO, ON – Inspired by the old stones and cold grey cement of a well-known Toronto landmark, a visionary live–action outdoor spy thriller will soon play at the upcoming Toronto Fringe Festival July 6th-17th, 2011.
The entire six member ensemble of Tononto-based Urban Jungle Theatre (www.urbanjungletheatre.ca/ispy), creaters and producers of Jungle 1: i Spy, used the unique blend of old and new architecture of Central Technical School in the city 80’s lively Annex area to stimulate and craft the scenes for the play which will be performed on-site at the old school. SURGEnce is a collection of dances that examines society and the myriad of issues therein. Through contemporary dance, Kinetic Elements deconstructs and transcends the boundaries of the labels that society puts upon us. reSURGEnce tackles issues ranging from the small-scale pressure to fit in and look a certain way to the grand-scale G20 Summit that took place in Toronto last June.
Kinetic Elements is comprised of a host of dancers with different dance backgrounds from across the GTA. Kinetic Elements’ Eternal Eclipse had a successful run at the 2010 Toronto Fringe Festival. Welcome to a town where everybody, from the Minstrel on up to the Mayor, needs something – but nobody, from the Doctor on down to the Ditch Digger, knows what it is they need. Well, that is, until a salesman (with a smile [and a suitcase {and a scam for the ages}]) finds his way to Town Square. The Travelling Salesman flatters his way into the hearts, minds and wallets of a town that wants what’s too good to be true, but could it be what they need was really there all along? A young girl who won’t take “no refunds!” for an answer thinks so. If only the Doctor would let her out more…
Rabbit Hole tells the story of a family dealing with a tragic loss. Becca and Howie lean on their family to put their lives back together after losing their 4yr old son Danny to a tragic car accident. Eight months of mourning in their own ways, leave Becca and Howie spiraling down a rabbit hole, with no clear way to get out. From Jason the teenager who had the misfortune of driving down their street that fateful day to Becca’s mother Nat and sister Izzy, all of the characters in this play confront their despair through comedy, wit and strength.
