Dancap Productions Inc., announced the Dancap Productions 2012 Tony Award®-Winning Subscription Series today, which president Aubrey Dan says is “inspired by the transformative power of the theatre”. The new series features six shows: American Idiot, In The Heights, Shrek The Musical, West Side Story, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast and Million Dollar Quartet, plus two “bonus” shows: A Christmas Story, The Musical! and Prince of Broadway.
Beginning the first national tour and kick-starting the Dancap season, American Idiot, which is based on Green Day’s GRAMMY® Award- winning multi-platinum album, “tells the story of three lifelong friends, forced to choose between their dreams and the safety of suburbia”. The show features hits “Boulevard of Broken Dreams,” “21 Guns,” “Wake Me Up When September Ends,” “Holiday” and the title track “American Idiot”. American Idiot will run December 28, 2011 – January 15, 2012 at Toronto Centre for the Arts.
In The Heights is “an exhilarating journey into a vibrant community, New York’s Washington Heights neighborhood – a place where the coffee is light and sweet, the windows are always open, and the breeze carries the rhythm of three generations of music”. The show is the winner of four 2008 Tony Awards® including Best Musical, Best Original Score Written for the Theatre, Best Choreography, and Best Orchestrations. In The Heights will run February 7 – 19, 2012 at the Toronto Centre for the Arts.
Based on the DreamWorks film, Shrek The Musical “tells the story of a swamp-dwelling ogre who goes on a life-changing adventure to reclaim the deed to his land.” The show features the familiar characters of Donkey, Princess Fiona and of course, a large green ogre named Shrek. Shrek The Musical will run March 20 – April 1, 2012 at the Toronto Centre for the Arts.
The recent Broadway revival of the classic musical West Side Story “has continued to mesmerize audiences with its timeless tale of doomed love,” and remains as powerful and timely as ever. West Side Story will run May 8 – June 3, 2012 at the Toronto Centre for the Arts.
Disney’s Beauty and The Beast will launch the Dancap Summer Series at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts in July 2012. The show features the animated film’s Academy Award®-winning score. Disney’s Beauty and The Beast will run July 3 – 22, 2012 at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts.
Million Dollar Quartet is “inspired by the true story of the famed recording session that brought together rock ‘n’ roll icons Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins”. In 1956, Sam Phillips, the ‘‘Father of Rock ’n’ Roll” gathered these four musicians for what would be one of the greatest jam sessions of all time. The show features a string of timeless hits including “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Fever,” “That’s All Right,” “Sixteen Tons,” “Great Balls of Fire,” “I Walk the Line,” and “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On.” Million Dollar Quartet will run July 20-29, 2012 at the Toronto Centre for the Arts.
As for the bonus shows, A Christmas Story, The Musical! chronicles Ralphie Parker as he schemes his way towards the holiday gift of his dreams, a Red Ryder Action Air Rifle BB Gun. The show is based on the classic Christmas film, where a leg lamp, pink bunny pajamas, a maniacal department store Santa, and a double-dog-dare to lick a freezing flagpole are just a few of the distractions that stand between young Ralphie and his Christmas wish. It will come to the Sony Centre for the Performing Arts in December 2012.
In the summer of 2012, Dancap Productions will present the world premiere of Prince of Broadway, “a celebration of the legendary Broadway director and producer Harold “Hal” Prince, whose career is considered the most influential and successful in American theatre.” Prince “created some of the most enduring and beloved theatre of all time, from 1954’s Pajama Game to The Phantom of the Opera, the longest-running show in Broadway history, among many, many other original productions.” Hal Prince was in attendance for the announcement, and said that this biography show is “the first one I’m looking forward to… I share a lot of mostly funny stories that have happened over 57 years.” The show will feature the words and music from the shows that have earned Hal Prince a record 21 Tony Awards® from Cabaret to Sweeny Todd, from Evita to Fiddler on the Roof and more!
Not only will there be exciting new shows coming to Toronto, but Dancap Productions has expanded into other parts of Canada, with a Montreal presentation of Shrek The Musical, and a Western Canadian tour of Jersey Boys.
