Review: Claire, From the Bus (Liars Theatre co.)

A quick and sexy comedy hits the stage at The Storefront Theatre in Toronto

Claire, From the Bus opened on Friday evening at The Storefront Theatre. I was supposed to go but hit my head really hard on a kitchen cabinet and had a headache that nothing would touch so I rescheduled to this afternoon. As I was going to my seat I tripped on a step and fell headlong into the row. All this to say that I risked life and limb to see Claire, From the Bus and it was worth it.

Claire, From the Bus is a funny, fast-paced, smart and funny (oh, wait, I already said funny) play about sex. It’s also about relationships – sexual and romantic, and friendships.

Kjartan Hewitt wrote and directed Claire, From the Bus and the result is impressive. He manages to develop the characters in just a few lines without making them seem like stereotypes. I liked all four, they all seemed like real people. The dialogue is natural and the story moves along at a brisk pace. I realized while I was watching the play how much I enjoy plays where the characters act and sound like real people but just a bit larger than life.

In the program it says that this is his fifth play. I’d like to see the other four.

Hewitt had help from a terrific cast. Ennis Esmer (The Listener) as Ralph, Bryn McAuley (Ross Petty’s Snow White), Mayko Nguyen (ReGenisis) and David Reale (Skins). They were all excellent and seemed to be having a good time. Good energy.

Claire, From the Bus was a great way to spend part of a Sunday afternoon. I highly recommend it. A warning though, lots of adult language.
