Yesterday evening I saw the opening performance of Yarn by Acky-Made at Majlis Multidisciplinary Arts. This was, first off, one of the coolest venues I’ve ever been to. It’s one of the the site-specifc venues in the Fringe Festival. Everything is outdoors with cute little cushions on your seats. There were candles and rope lights everywhere with tons of greenery and the smell of citronella was in the air. It was the perfect setting for a summer night at the theatre.
Yarn, written and performed by Alex Eddington, tells the story of the writer spending 177 days on a lonely Scottish Island in an attempt to find himself, but ends up losing his mind instead.
At first glance, when I noticed a large pillar downstage centre, I wondered how the actor would cope in terms of blocking around this seeming disadvantage. However, as the show began, I was so engaged that I didn’t even notice the pillar anymore.
Alex Eddington presents a light-hearted story in such a unique way, through music, sound effects, and props that you are instantly entertained. So well paced, I was engaged throughout.
What can I say, other than the fact that it was just a truly enjoyable evening. Clearly, this show was a labour of love and Alex Eddington‘s commitment to his work was really nice to watch.
