June 10, 2014, TORONTO— A black woman and a Jewish man walk into a bar. Sounds like the opening to a racy joke but it’s the true story of Nai’mah Hassan and Steve Epstein of The Black and the Jew. This 21st century love story brings razor sharp insights on race, sex, politics and relationships to Toronto for its Canadian debut July 3 at Toronto Fringe Festival in the Annex Theatre (730 Bathurst St) with their show She’s Black, He’s Jewish, They’re Married, Oy Vey!
Epstein and Hassan make up The Black and The Jew, a husband and wife team who use their unique brand of comedy to tackle tough topics. The Los Angeles Times says, “my laughter was illuminated by the insightful and humorous dialogue of interracial married couple Epstein and Hassan.”
Written by the couple and directed by Joe Keys, She’s Black, He’s Jewish, They’re Married, Oy Vey! is worthy of its provocative title and mature language warning. Epstein and Hassan are shockingly candid as they reveal personal yet universal insights into relationships, politics and sex.
A playful take on interracial marriage, the New York Daily News says, “Epstein and Hassan, an interracial married couple, are the Burns and Allen or the Desi and Lucy for the new millennium…something wonderful happens between these two.”
She’s Black, He’s Jewish, They’re Married, Oy Vey! offers audience members a peek into the 27 year old marriage that began in the entrance to a New York City jazz club and evolved into a public proclamation on improving relationships both with your partner as well as yourself. Their secret is something they call black/jew/love technology.
She’s Black, He’s Jewish, They’re Married, Oy Vey! Is playing at the Annex Theatre and runs from July 3 – July 12, 2014. Tickets are $12 available for purchase on the Fringe Festival website http://fringetoronto.com/.
