SLUT (Beer in a Glass Productions) 2014 Toronto Fringe Review

Debuting at this year’s Toronto Fringe Festival, Erin Thompson and Beer in a Glass Productions presents SLUT, her one woman show that explores sex, sexuality, and relationships in the modern world. It’s like Sex and the City through the eyes of one woman continuing and expanding from where Carrie and the girls left off.

It’s a very appropriate time for Thompson to debut this particular show. In the face of the current #yesallwomen movement in response to the current onslaught of misogyny and violence against women that has plagued our society as of late, this show acts as a voice for women to embrace their sex and sexuality no matter how they choose to express it.

In this performance Thompson takes on the persona of Diana (the Roman goddess of the hunt, the moon, and birthing) to represent the core of all women. On top of her Roman robes, she dons costumes representing the various stages of her sexual growth and evolution.

Accompanying her is Robert Steven Wilkinson taking on the persona of Apollo (god of the sun) and acting as keyboard player for Thompson’s various musical interludes.

Thompson’s tale begins from her young impressionable years of having a boyfriend at the age of 5 and the inevitable ‘I’ll show you mine if you show me yours’ right to her discovery of bdsm sex, polyamory, and her unshakable desire to have a baby.

It’s a story that many can relate to regardless of identity or orientation — anyone who has ever dated, explored, looked at the idea of casual sex and didn’t see it as a negative. Considering the sold out show on opening night, it’s a story that has already reached many.

The laughs are plenty and the crowd hoots and hollers in response to her – an acknowledgement of ‘I know what you mean’. The pleasant surprise with this performance is the music. Thompson is also a lyricist, with Wilkinson accompanying her, the songs that she sings beautifully turn the show into a lively musical. The songs are catchy and memorable.

This is clearly an adult show with adult content and nudity so the viewer discretion goes without saying. But if none of that bothers you (you’re not a prude) and you’re up for a riotous good time, do check out SLUT.
