S-27

From press release: S-27 is a searing drama drawn from testimony of events in the Khmer Rouge’s S-21 prison, now the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum in Cambodia. Photographs of former prisoners now covering the museum’s walls inspired the characters and story of this historic fiction. While the ongoing trials of former Khmer Rouge leaders try to establish responsibility for the events of the 1970s, this play explores personal choice within a society.

S-27, by British playwright Sarah Grochala, won Amnesty International’s Protect The Human Playwriting Award in 2007. It has had critically acclaimed productions in the UK and Australia. Director Yolanda Ferrato saw the original production at the Finborough Theatre in London while working in the UK, and was inspired to produce it with her company, Intersection Theatre, for a Toronto audience.

This piece plays at The Annex Theatre. Performances: July 8 12:30 PM, July 9 8:30 PM , July 11 3:30 PM, July 12 11:00 PM, July 13 12:00 AM, July 13 4:30 PM, July 14 5:45 PM

Sad People

From press release: Bringing together the best of theatre with the best in sketch comedy, Sad People explores the mental illness, depression and general sadness that surrounds our lives – in an unexpected, hilarious format that is one part performance art, one part support group. And with different special guests with new material each night, every performance is a unique therapeutic experience.

Guests include Evany Rosen (Picnicface), Tom Henry (CCA nominee, Laugh Sabbath), Anders Yates(Uncalled For’s Hypnogogic Logic), Kris Siddiqi (Second City), Ken Hall (CCA nominee for 2 Man No-Show), Henri Fabergé (Heligoland Follies, Henri Fabergé and the Adorables), Kathleen Phillips (Laugh Sabbath), James Hartnett (That’s So Weird, Laugh Sabbath, CCA 2011 winner), Sandra Battaglini (Classy Lady), Dan Beirne (The Trotsky, The Bitter End, Dad Drives) and Freddie Rivas (Rap Battlez).

Crashland

From press release: Crashland began as a staging of T.S. Eliot’s The Waste Land as a play for four voices. However, upon strong recommendation by Eliot’s publisher the project was abandoned. In the aftermath of this exchange, there were four characters – four unique stories remaining.

Crashland developed out of this rubble, in a way that encapsulates the still relevant modernist ideals for which Eliot’s text was known. As Crashland’s characters piece together “what’s left” after the accident, the actors are obliged to undergo a similar experience – embracing a text comprised of the left-overs from the original piece.

By retelling the strange and familiar stories in poetic, yet fragmented language, the actors commit to the challenge of speaking back to a canonized text.

Hangman Theatre is an emerging company from St. Catharines, Ontario – the newly appointed Cultural Capital of Canada. Members include: Gillian Fournier (Toronto Fringe 2011); Geoffrey Heaney (Toronto Fringe 2011, London Fringe 2010); Nathan Tanner Mac Donald (Toronto Fringe 2011, 2010); Michael Pearson (In the Soil 2011); Caitlin Popek (Solar Stage 2011). Crashland was written by Fournier and directed by Mac Donald.
