Shows that Caught Our Eye in Toronto for the Week of March 2, 2020
And here we are in March! It sure is coming in like a lamb. Or at least the weather is. But the Toronto theatre scene keeps roaring right along. Putting together this week’s listings, the number of Free or PWYC shows certainly caught my eye. So did the amount of Comedy, which I know I could go in for after the past couple of weeks of grey and gloomy weather.

Brain Storm (Dancemakers Studio Theatre, 3rd Floor 9 Trinity). A visually arresting and comically haunting look at the ramifications of brain surgery and how one woman finds her way in a reality that is forever different. Created in collaboration with the cast, BRAIN STORM will have its World Premiere in February 2020 following a critically-acclaimed workshop production at Toronto Fringe. Lady Sunrise (Factory Theatre, 125 Bathurst) by Marjorie Chan. Set in Canada’s condo and casino playground of Vancouver, this hard-hitting new play is a tale of social climbing and the fraying social fabric among the wealthy and hangers-on of Vancouver’s Asian Canadian community. Inspired by the modern classic, Sunrise by Cao Yu, this world premiere features a cast of six powerful Asian Canadian women, and examines the damning effect of today’s hyper-consumerist society. Angel’s Atlas with Chroma & Marguerite and Armand (Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts, 145 Queen W). National Ballet of Canada presents a mixed program of new and old works. Crystal Pite debuts a brand new work for The National Ballet of Canada; Wayne McGregor’s 2010 work, Chroma; and Sir Frederick Ashton’s Marguerite and Armand, which will be the final performance for principal dancer Greta Hodgkinson. I Will Rise (Lawrence Park Community Church, 2180 Bayview). I Will Rise is a racially and culturally diverse family play that emphasizes the importance of birth families, as well as the families we create out of common values, community and sometimes survival. It explores what freedom means; and what price we as individuals are willing to pay in order to be free.
