Almost Maine (Wolverine Theatre Company) 2013 Toronto Fringe Review

It’s always a win for me when I get to review a play that I think possesses the qualities of a quintessential Fringe festival production. Wolverine Theatre Company’s show, Almost Maine, is exactly that: a simple, well-acted piece that takes place in the frosty chill of St. Vlad’s Theatre, but does a lot to warm the heart.

A series of two-hander vignettes that all take place in a tiny, non-town called Almost, the piece is a straight, to the point exploration of love in all its guises. The scenes work as individual stories, but some make reference to characters from other sections, which rounds out the world of the play in a truly great way. I think there’s something to be said about the strong sense of place this piece has that often gets overlooked in other works.

Hip.Bang! Improv (Hip.Bang! Improv) 2013 Toronto Fringe Review

hipbang

I’m always torn when reviewing improv shows, mostly because I know that the show I saw will never again be seen by anyone else and that every night will be a completely different experience. So let me instead elaborate on the dynamic of this tall, lanky duo. (Seriously, why is every Canadian indie comic a bean pole person?)

Adventure! (Your Good Friends) 2013 Toronto Fringe Review

adventure

There is nothing I don’t like in the brief synopsis of Adventure!, produced by Your Good Friends, that’s posted on the Toronto Fringe website, but I have to say I was not expecting what I ended up seeing at the Factory Theatre Thursday night. What I saw, was better.

Tired and weary of domestic bliss, Sir Godfrey departs from his castle in search of excitement and knightly endeavours. With his trusty squire Osric, his journey brings him face to face with a slew of interesting characters, somewhat worthy foes and a monster that’s more than meets the eye.
