BOTCHED – Toronto Fringe 2012 Press Release

From press release

What are your thoughts on abortion?
What if you were aborted but lived to think about it?

A dark and absurd comedy drawing influence from Sarah Kane and Eugene Ionesco,Botched explores the polarized debate on abortion. The play follows the parallel journeys of two women: One who had an abortion eighteen years ago; another, a surviving ‘botched’ fetus all grown up who searches for her mother.

Though abortion is one of the most common medical procedures among women today, there is an awkward compassion that surrounds this procedure in our society: we are concerned for the general female population en masse and how abortion affects them, but on an individual level the topic remains taboo.

Recently, there has been a resurgence of bills and legal debates over women’s rights to abortion and reproductive health in Canada and the United States. Yet amongst the policy and the protests, the debate and the discourse, the human voice of the women truly affected is lost. Presented by an all female cast and crew, Botched brings this conflicted voice to stage.

Colleen Osborn was raised in a very Pro-Life household. Her mother was the president of Alliance for Life in 1978/79. Exposed to a barrage of information through public debate, images, and protests throughout her childhood, Botched in many ways was inspired by the playwright’s reluctance to see the controversial issue of abortion in black and white terms.

Warning: This play contains adult subject matter, graphic content, one anthropomorphized egg, and dolls.
You don’t want to miss it!

CHARLIE: A Hockey Story – Toronto Fringe 2012 Press Release

From press release

“If you’re too tired to skate, I always say, then you can still crawl.
And crawling back is better than not coming back at all.”~Charlie Sands

Hockey meets Shakespeare for a rock ’em, sock ’em theatrical experience! Jim Sands solo show CHARLIE: A Hockey Story is coming to the Toronto Fringe this summer. Using music and storytelling, Jim weaves a tale about his love of Shakespeare, his father’s love of hockey, and the important lesson in forgiveness he learned while exploring the hockey career of an uncle he never met – Charlie Sands, a smooth skating right-winger who played in the NHL during the ’30s and ’40s.
