Two Gents is a successful twist on a theatre classic – and it plays in a Toronto park!
In the centre of Withrow Park, at the bottom of a small hill are planted two large trees. It is between these trees that Shakespeare in the Ruff is staging their inaugural performance. Just as they are a new version of an old company, so is their presentation of Shakespeare’s Two Gentleman of Verona, entitled Two Gents.
The solos follow five quirky characters as they struggle through their personal challenges. Sylphia, Mr. Leftovers, Oracle, Olga and Almost Queen share their crazy personalities with the audience through humorous dialogue and unexpected movement choices.
I was wary when siting down to see Empire of the Magic Beanstalks (Vampire Frog Productions) playing at the Palmerston Library Theatre as part of the Toronto Fringe Festival FringeKids! series. I find there to be a tendency in children’s theatre for the acting to be over-exaggerated and the script to hold far too many lines beginning with “Did you know?” For the most part this was, thankfully, not the case with this show.
