Today is Blue Monday. Supposedly the most depressing day of the year – it’s Monday, which sucks, plus it’s already been a month since Christmas, and we’re a month away from Valentine’s Day. So what to do? How about getting out of the house and seeing some theatre! Here are our playlistings for the week. Anything highlighted in red with two asterisks before it comes highly recommended by our Editor, Mike.
The Toronto Fringe Festival runs a yearly festival called Next Stage Theatre Festival (NSTF), which they bill as “12 days of the best indie theatre in Canada”. There’s a wide variety of shows playing at the festival, and we’ve reviewed all of them! Check out our coverage below to find out more about the shows playing and to see our reviews. A full festival schedule is available here.

It’s cold. It’s really, really, cold. But hey, we live in Canada – if we never went out when it was cold, we’d never go anywhere. Except for the summer. But hush. In any case, if you want to get out of the house to see some Cheap Theatre, these are some shows playing in Toronto this week for $22 or less per ticket. There’s opera, there’s dance, there’s puppets, there’s Into The Woods, and there’s Chekov! What more could you ask for?
It’s the first “real” week, so to speak, of the 2015 theatre season in Toronto. The holidays are as over as they’re going to be, and we haven’t started having Valentine’s Day-themed shows pop up, just yet. We of course still have the Next Stage Theatre Festival going on, but there’s a lot to see outside of the fest, as well! See if anything strikes your fancy. If it’s red, and got two asterisks before it, it’s been recommended by Samantha, our Editor.
If you’re a fan of the Toronto Fringe Festival, or small, indie theatre in general, then do yourself a favour, and check out Fringe’s Next Stage Theatre Festival, which kicks off this Thursday! For this week’s Cheap Theatre listing, I’ve highlighted five of the shows that I’m really excited about (particularly Snack Music, created by the same folks behind Kitt and Jane, one of my favourite shows from last year’s Fringe). You can see each show for $15, or get a pass for several shows, and save even more! For ticket purchases, and to see schedules, and all the other shows playing, check out the Toronto Fringe website!
