Necessary Angel Theatre Company brings an arresting production of 4.48 Psychosis to Toronto’s Berkeley Street Theatre

Where to begin? I have been fascinated by Sarah Kane and her tragic story since I read her plays in university.  What could drive someone so incredibly talented and intelligent to take her own life, I wondered. Naturally, I wanted to see Necessary Angel‘s production of 4.48 Psychosis at the Berkeley Street Theatre. Yet, I was also circumspect about the whole thing.

Review: Here to Hear (Carousel Players)

The Carousel Players educate and entertains little ones about music in their latest production playing at Toronto’s Young People’s Theatre

I can’t say I have ever had to set my alarm to wake up in time to see a play before, but there’s a first time for everything I guess. As I got out of bed on February 5th I thought to myself “this better be worth it.” After a strong cup of coffee and a snowy streetcar ride, I arrived at Young People’s Theatre for the Carousel Players production of Here to Hear.

Review: A Woman of No Importance (Alumnae Theatre)

Oscar Wilde’s A Woman of No Importance gets a modern Toronto twist at Alumnae Theatre

On Saturday night my friend Matt and I made our way to the Alumnae Theatre to catch a performance of Oscar Wilde‘s famous play A Woman of No Importance. As we entered the beautifully lit theatre, we saw three large window frames hanging from the ceiling with dozens of butterflies attached to strings directly behind them. Two actors stood on stage in period garb, one reading a book, the other embroidering.

Review: The Penelopiad (Nightwood Theatre)

Margaret Atwood’s The Penelopiad a “seriously mind-blowing” Toronto theatre experience

For many Canadian girls that grew up in the 80s and 90s, Anne Shirley and Mrs. Rachel Lynde were household names (or maybe I was just a giant geek?). Anne of Green Gables and Road to Avonlea were like our virtual babysitters. So when I heard that The Penelopiad was being re-mounted with Megan Follows and Patricia Hamilton themselves at Buddies in Bad Times Theatre, having missed it the first time, I eagerly jumped at the opportunity to see it.
