It may be mid-November, but we’re sure you’ve caught glimpses of those time-telling glittering lights draped over trees around the city. Halloween is long gone, which means the gift-giving season is on the horizon. Some of you might like to get a head start, some of you might like to procrastinate, but no matter what kind of holiday shopper you are (or if you shop at all), it’s a season that can put a lot of strain on one’s wallet. However, we don’t think buying that perfect gift should mean sacrificing a night out at the theatre, especially when it isn’t even December yet. Here’s a smattering of affordable theatre for the week:

Ticket Giveaway Contest: Robert Morgan’s The Anger in Ernest and Ernestine at Unit 102 Theatre

Mooney on Theatre is giving away two pairs of tickets, one pair to each preview show of Robert Morgan’s play The Anger in Ernest and Ernestine, on Tuesday, November 6th and Wednesday, November 7th, 2012 at 8pm at Unit 102 Theatre (376 Dufferin St).

To be entered into the draw for a pair of tickets just send an email to contests@mooneyontheatre.com with the subject line “Ernest and Ernestine Contest” and the date you want to attend (Nov. 6 or 7) by 7:00PM on Sunday, November 4th, 2012.

You may enter once for either date. If entering for both dates please send a separate entry e-mail for each performance with the date specified in the subject line e.g. “Ernest and Ernestine Contest on Nov. 6” or “Ernest and Ernestine Contest on Nov. 7”

Once upon a time on a dark stormy night it happened to a friend of a friend  of mine… All viable methods to start off a story. You’ve probably used one or two once or twice to kick off a round of playing the raconteur. Even in its most elaborate forms, theatre is driven by how well its practitioners can tell a story. Below you’ll find five selections from this week’s theatre listings that express the importance of stories and storytelling in one way or another. From the most familiar methods to the more subtle, from exploring the folklore of another culture to exploring the past of the city we walk through every day.
