Palace of the End- Alumnae Theatre

If you go to see Alumnae Theatre’s Palace of the End, don’t expect to leave feeling happy.  The effectively staged show will leave you more than a little devastated.  Thankfully, I knew what to expect from a Judith Thompson play.

Thompson’s play is a collection of three monologues, each focusing on different aspects of the war in Iraq.  The three stories, told by a pregnant soldier (Laura Vincent), a weapons expert (Christopher Kelk) and an Iraqi mother (Sochi Fried) are all based on real people, making the stories that much more haunting and potent.

The show is incredibly well put together.  All actors are involved in the monologues, whether by speaking them or supporting them from the background.  One of my favourite uses of this was having two of the actors be trees, swaying in the background, giving a real sense of place.

I’m going to preface this review with two very important facts about myself: One is that I don’t speak Yiddish.  The other, I’m somewhat ashamed to say, is that I’m fairly unfamiliar with the work of Theodore Bikel, an icon in theatre and television.  This might be a bit of a deterrent in choosing to see a show like Sholom Aleichem: Laughter Through Tears, which opened last night at the Winter Garden Theatre, but Bikel manages to keep the show grounded, entertaining and at some points heartbreaking.  Continue reading Sholom Aleichem: Laughter Through Tears- Harold Green Jewish Theatre Company

Nursery School Musical- Fence Post Productions

Kylee Evans and Diana Coatsworth in Nursery School Musical 2009

Last night I found myself in somewhat of a miserable mood.  Work was stressful as usual, I forgot money for the TTC ride home, and to top it off I was fighting a useless battle against a cold that’s filled my head with goo.  Why am I boring you with these mundane (and gross) details?  Because Nursury School Musical, currently playing at the Berkeley Street Theatre, made all of these things fly from my mind.
