2012 Next Stage Theatre Festival Review: Uncalled For Presents Hypnogogic Logic

I think it’s safe to say that not everyone will love Hypnogogic Logic, but personally, I loved it.

Kind of hard to describe it exactly, one audience member said: “If you like Monty Python, you’ll probably like this.”  I suspect that’s true, although, it isn’t particularly reminiscent of Monty Python, other than having elements of “weird”.  It’s sketch comedy, but smoother, surreal and absurd.  The surreal and absurd make a heck of a lot of sense since it’s billed as “trip through the world of dreams”.

2012 Next Stage Theatre Review: Living With Henry (Beyond Boundaries)

Next Stage Theatre Festival 2012I didn’t know what to expect from Living With Henry. Would it be a drama? A comedy? Probably not a comedy, it’s a musical about living with HIV. Was I going to sob through the whole production? Would I enjoy it?

Yes, I enjoyed it a lot. Living With Henry is a drama but is never heavy handed. There are a lot of funny moments but the script never goes for the cheap laugh. The songs blend seamlessly with the dialogue and are there to move the story forward. It all works together perfectly.

2012 Next Stage Theatre Festival Review: LoveSexMoney

Looking for a smart, sophisticated comedy that will keep you laughing for an hour and a half and also provide some social commentary? Well, LoveSexMoney at the Next Stage Festival delivers this in a perfect sexy package. The show takes a very witty, modern look at the relationship between love, sex, money and everything in between.

Although there are some over the top concepts within the show, that make it hilarious, I found it to be very relatable and honest overall. A grown-up and extremely well written concept that takes a believable look at relationships in this day and age, where everyone grows up too fast and there’s really no magic or romance left. It’s all about being practical and making the best business decision. But, did I mention it’s absolutely hilarious?  Continue reading 2012 Next Stage Theatre Festival Review: LoveSexMoney

2012 Next Stage Theatre Festival Review: Morro and Jasp: Go Bake Yourself

Morro & Jasp: Go Bake Yourself, produced in the Next Stage Theatre Festival, is a clown version of a cooking show. The first course is hors d’oeuvres, which is funny; the second course is comfort food, which is funnier still; the final course is a special homemade recipe which is ludicrously, laugh-a-nanosecond funny.

The performers, Amy Lee and Heather Marie Annis, are very adept at clowning. They and director/dramaturge Byron Laviolette are obviously well-versed in what a clown show entails and what makes it work. One of these aspects is the dynamic of the duo: Morro and Jasp are sisters and Morro is the younger, wilder one while Jasp is older and more practical. (Note that in clowning, “practical” can be the person who restrains their partner from doing bodily harm to themselves or others via fun but ill-advised antics; the character of Jasp is certainly not “practical” in any real-world sense.)

You can expect singing, dancing, corny jokes, scantily clad men and women and eyerolling (I mean that in a good way) sexual innuendo.  If you’ve ever seen Beach Party (or any of the 1960s Beach Party movies) then just imagine that, only live, and more fun.
